What is WIC?
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a federally funded program that serves pregnant women, caregivers, new mothers, infants, and children under age five.
WIC provides:
- Healthy supplemental foods
- Nutrition assessment and education
- Breastfeeding services
- Referrals to other health and social services
Who is WIC For?
You are eligible for WIC if:
- You live in Maryland
- You are pregnant, a new mother or caregiver with an infant or child under 5
- You have a nutritional need
- You meet income guidelines

Johns Hopkins WIC promotes the health and nutritional well-being of low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children under five years of age living in Baltimore through practice, research and community engagement.
- The program serves nearly 9,000 participants.
- Johns Hopkins WIC operates in 15 sites, including Head Start, Judy Centers, and Shelters for the homeless and domestically abused women and children in Baltimore.
- Peer counselors provide supportive services to breastfeeding women.
The Story of WIC
WIC serves around half of all infants born in the US. The program has an extraordinary record of preventing children’s health problems and improving their long-term health, growth and development.
The prototype for the National WIC Program was designed and piloted at Johns Hopkins and adopted nationally by Congress in 1974. Watch the two-part video series about how the WIC program began:
